New Peer-Run Respite celebrates successful first year, growth

Non-profit organization supports community health, expands to provide more services

MENOMONIE, WI: Since first opening its doors in April of 2016, Grassroots Wellness Peer-Run Respite and Learning Community, at 820 N Broadway Street, has provided support in a home-like environment to over 100 adults experiencing difficulties due to mental health or substance use-related issues. Workers at the respite provide support based on their own recovery experiences from times of crisis.

The first year has been so successful that the organization is expanding to a new space. Grassroots on Main: Community Wellness and Empowerment Center, at 305 Main Street East, will serve as a central office for Comprehensive Community Services (CCS). Through CCS, peer supporters with lived experience provide one-to-one support to individuals in the Western Wisconsin community who have a mental health or substance use diagnosis and are seeking recovery and wellness.

In addition to CCS, Grassroots on Main will offer a sober space for the Learning Community to host groups and events. Other organizations and individuals with similar missions may also use the space for meetings and events.

Open House: Grassroots on Main Grand Opening Celebration will be held Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 3 PM to 7 PM. Community members may visit to learn more about the organization and what it offers. Anyone is encouraged to drop by the celebration to enjoy refreshments and take part in Grassroots’ community-building efforts.

About Grassroots Wellness Peer-Run Respite and Learning Community: Our mission is to empower recovery and wellness through choice, connection, and community. The respite is a non-medical crisis alternative for individuals who believe they can benefit from the peer support model.

What happens at the Respite: Guests can stay for up to seven days in one of four bedrooms and choose to participate in wellness and recovery activities. Peer supporters who work at the respite offer resources and a mutual connection with guests through their own life experiences.

Guests and community members can also take advantage of the Learning Community, which consists of wellness and support groups on premises – such as Healing Through Arts and peer-run Narcotics Anonymous groups.

“The set-up of the Respite is a truly revolutionary place full of love and compassion. It’s the most helpful mental health ‘facility’ I’ve ever encountered,” reports one individual who stayed at the Respite. “I love that it’s a comfortable home environment staffed by helpful, nonjudgmental people.”
